Rapid response to safeguard water quality at Gelre Hospital in Apeldoorn
Tilburg – November 11th, 2024
In October 2024, MTD rapidly deployed a temporary water infrastructure for the Gelre Hospital in Apeldoorn after E. coli contamination was detected in the local water network. This critical intervention allowed the hospital to maintain water supply for essential services safely.
Key points & numbers:
Following the discovery of E. coli in the Vitens water supply, MTD swiftly provided a secure water solution for the Gelre Hospital, including:
- First system on-site within 24 hours
- Full installation of a parallel temporary water infrastructure, creating a bypass for the hospital’s own water buffer
- Two large buffer bags supplying 170 m³ of safe water daily, maintained with continuous refills by local partners
- Ongoing quality assurance with sterilized piping, UV filtration, and regular water sampling
Requests:
Upon detecting E. coli in the local water supply, the Gelre Hospital required an immediate, safe water solution to meet the needs of its patients, staff, and facility operations. MTD was tasked with installing a temporary water infrastructure that could operate in parallel to the hospital’s own system, allowing continuous service without risk of contamination.
Challenges:
Working within the hospital’s limited available space and meeting high daily water demands posed logistical challenges. MTD installed two large buffer bags and a full bypass system with UV filtration, sterilized piping, and pumps to maintain strict health standards. The team also coordinated with local partners to provide continuous refills, meeting the hospital’s 170 m³ daily water requirement. Additionally, rigorous testing and sterilization were performed to ensure all water met medical-grade quality.
Achievements:
MTD successfully delivered the first system within 24 hours, supporting the hospital’s critical operations. Through the installation of a parallel water infrastructure and continuous refill services with local partners, the MTD team ensured reliable water access for the Gelre Hospital. This rapid, adaptable response underscored MTD’s commitment to supporting healthcare facilities in times of urgent need, ensuring safe conditions for all.
